The LIFE VIABLE project

Valorization of lignin bIomass into competitive components grAdually replacing BPA in the formuLation of Epoxy resins

BPA Bisphenol A (BPA) is a commodity chemical produced world-wide in a large volume every year. It is used in the production of epoxy resins and polycarbonates. However, its endocrine disrupting properties and its fossil-based composition raise concerns about its environmental impact and health toxicity as well as its sustainability.

The LIFE VIABLE project therefore aims to improve the sustainability and the environmental impact of epoxy resins manufacture by lowering the BPA content in the formulation of epoxy resins by 20 to 50%.

News - In the spotlight

Are bio-base resins really ready for large-scale adoption?

Help shape the future of bio-based resins

As sustainability becomes a key priority across industries, bio-based materials are gaining momentum. However, their adoption still raises important questions especially around perception, acceptance, and market integration.

We are launching a short survey aimed at stakeholders across the value chain (industry professionals, researchers, specifiers, etc.) working on or interested in bio-based resins.

Objective: to better understand the societal aspects of their adoption and support the development of future projects and initiatives in this field.

Bio-aromatics on the Rise

Building on the great momentum from the “Bio-aromatics on the Rise” event earlier this month

As part of the VIABLE European project, Marc Comí Bonachí from VITO attended the event and took part in the discussions around scaling up lignin and sugar derived bio aromatics as fossil free alternatives. The event brought together industry, researchers and stakeholders to explore concrete pathways from pilot scale to industrial implementation, fully aligned with VIABLE’s ambition to enable sustainable, circular and high-performance bio-based materials.
These exchanges are key to connecting research outcomes with industrial needs and accelerating the transition towards fossil-free aromatics.
Thank you to the organizers and all participants for an inspiring and insightful day.

Succesfull pilot trial in Duisburg

We are pleased to share some exciting news from the VIABLE project 🚀

Our pilot trial in Duisburg was a real success! We successfully produced 30 kg of a bio-based epoxy resin made from depolymerized lignin, which will be then shipped to Syensqo for the next development steps.
This achievement represents a key milestone for the project and brings us one step closer to replacing fossil-based materials with sustainable, bio-based alternatives.
A big thank you to all partners and colleagues whose dedication and teamwork made this possible.

On to the next milestone!

Milestone achieved! First large scale delivery of depolymerised lignin

📢 Milestone Achieved! In April 2025, the LignoValue pilot plant successfully completed its first large-scale (multi kg) delivery of depolymerized lignin under the LIFE VIABLE project — a major step forward in sustainable materials innovation at VITO.
This breakthrough product consists of well-defined, soluble, and highly reactive lignin oligomers, made possible through advanced depolymerization processes. The material has now been shipped to Westlake, where it will be used in the large-scale production of lignin-based epoxy resins for automotive composite applications. This marks a significant leap toward replacing fossil-based materials with bio-based alternatives, paving the way for a greener future in the mobility sector. 🌱🚗
